What is an executor (personal representative) and what do they do?

An executor is a person appointed by you in your will to gather your assets. We call it marshaling your assets and then distributing them out. The executor is a fiduciary, which means that they have a high duty of care and they’re held to a higher standard with respect to your assets than they are to even their own assets. An executor typically works with an attorney to probate your will and to make sure that at the end of the day your assets are distributed.
